Leadership Competency 1: Ensuring Long Term Results
One of the key differences between
managing and leading is the ability to
see the big picture. While managers ask,
"How are we doing today?" the leader
will ask "How will this impact our
organization going forward?" It is this
long-term view that is the foundation
for the leader’s vision and strategic
plan.
As any financial advisor will tell
you, most traditional investors will
benefit from holding their investments
for the long term, rather than tinkering
with their portfolio in response to
every short-term market hiccup. Unless
you are an active and skilled
day-trader, reacting to market
fluctuations day to day will distract
you from reaching long term objectives.
In the same way, the focus on long-term
results frees leaders from getting
bogged down in short-term losses or
overstating temporary wins; instead, the
leader knows that these are just
incremental steps towards the overall
end goal.
Focusing on long-term results also
allows the leader to look outside of his
or her own organization when designing
models for continued growth. Strategic
intelligence can be collected from a
variety of external sources, including
general industry research, successful
models developed by competitors, and
even by studying the success of
organizations that operate in a
completely different industry sectors.
This workshop will help leaders
understand the importance of long-term
results and how to turn information from
the world around them into knowledge
that will ensure success.
