Leadership Competency 2: Leading Others
The term “leader” involves two basic
assumptions. The first assumption is
that you have a goal or vision you are
pursuing. However, this module focuses
on the second assumption: you have
people following you.
Think about those whom you consider
to be leaders (both past and present).
Would they have made much of an impact
without those that followed them?
Without an army, George Patton would
have had to fight battles by himself.
Without those sharing in the cause,
Martin Luther King’s call for justice
would have fallen on deaf ears.
The term “one-man leadership” is an
oxymoron. An effective leader is one who
can not only develop a vision, but who
also finds creative and innovative ways
to communicate that vision so that it
attracts and retains followers.
In a survey of top-level executives,
it was discovered that those qualities
we admire in leaders (honesty,
competence, forward looking, and
inspiration) are not too different from
those we want to see in followers
(honesty, competence, dependence, and
cooperation). If you are able to
creatively communicate your vision to
others, you will be able to draw those
you need to share in your goal.
An effective leader causes change,
not just in the world, but in those he
or she leads.
