Leadership Competency 3: Building Strong Teams
“None of us is as good as all of us”
-Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald’s
From a leadership perspective,
building successful teams is
immeasurably valuable. However, building
teams can be a bit like playing with
fireworks. If you assemble them right,
have the right parameters, and light the
fire at the right time you have a
beautiful display of energy and color.
However, if any of these is out of
balance you just have a big explosion
and a massive mess to clean up.
Experts acknowledge that most of our
learning – and most productive work -
comes in a team or group environment. In
a group, if you encounter a problem, you
can ask for help or input from your
teammates who offer a fresh perspective.
Dividing work among team members can get
things accomplished with greater
efficiency. Also, drawing on the
expertise of others will often increase
the overall quality of your work.
Therefore, it is important to not
only identify when you need teams, but
to also recruit the right members (both
internally and externally), set the
right goals, and respond to suggested
improvements. Doing so will enable you
to transform your vision into reality.
